Zack Allison Makes the Time Cut
Does it on an ’82(ish) Specialized Stumpjumper at Gila
Just what the sport needs, a feel-good bike-racing story and this one is about @ZacharyAllison. Here’s how it was told to me
Yesterday at Tour of the Gila the team’s sprinter, Zack Allison, was caught up in a crash at the bottom of the Mogollon finishing climb. This was at the end of a 92 mile road race that saw Zack make a number or trips back to the team car — delivering bottles to his climber / GC-hopeful teammates, and he still had the 6 mile ascent of the Mogollon climb in front of him. As he picked himself up from the wreck and got going — trying to get back inside the caravan — his rear derailleur exploded. So he started walking, just hoping to make time cut and be able to help his team another day. Then he saw a spectator with an ’82(ish) Specialized Stumpjumper, and he traded him his Giant Propel Advanced Pro as collateral… He even started picking guys off, once he got going.
Zach’s finish gets my vote as has to be one of the best stories of a rider “just making time cut.” Also on Instagram……
Zack’s 25, a 1st year pro, and before that a National Champ — 2015 Elite Team Pursuit, 2014 elite/pro Team pursuit.
