On Element.ly: The People You Need To Know In The Bike Industry

The Element.ly and Bike Hugger assignment at Interbike was to find and shoot The People You Need To Know In The Bike Industry for a portrait gallery with a few Qs and As. The people are players, industry insiders, and colleagues I’ve known for years. This is who we’re drinking beer and swapping stories with, and catching up from the last time we rode together. After dragging them off the show floor to a nearby (and very nice) set of palm trees, they were asked the same few questions.

  • How did you get into the bike business?
  • What have you learned?
  • And would do differently?
  • Finally, in your career, what trends have you spotted?

Of all the photos, my fav is this one of Chris DiStefano from Rapha and his mortician pose. He told me that’s the only one he knows and learned it from his dad.

“It’s sexy,” I said.

I had lots of fun shooting these industry insiders and it’s a pleasure working with Jim and and Jakob. They launched Element.ly just this year and the site is about being outside and telling stories. My previous contribution was Time Warps on a Seattle Bike Path and the assignment also marks my first set of portraits.

I’m normally shooting street, bikes, races, and gear for Bike Hugger magazine.
